Broken Project (Trace Elements)

After looking at different markings/scratches/stains I decided to take my project down a more specific route of things that are broken. I created a mind map in my sketchbook exploring different imagery/metaphors/ideas that accociate with the term "Broken". Majority of the ideas that came from doing this where quite negative; pain, damage, violence etc. The imagery that comes to mind is quite dark, sharp and quite scary.
I began to collate images and drawings of different broken things. Broken glassand cracks in the road etc.

These images are from our small bathroom double glazed window, where the inside glaze smashed.

Using the photographs I took as reference I created some new collaged drawings. Painting out some of the patterns made from the smashed glass with black ink onto a collaged background.

I really like some of the collaged/textured pages i'd made and really wanted to make us of them as backgrounds or as overlays. So I experimented in different ways photocopying them. These ones above are photocopies that were done in black & white with exposure hightened. I thought they looked really effective like this. Quite dark and grungey looking, and just added more definition to some of the shapes and gave them more impact.
