Hand Rendered Type.

I decided to see how type could work into the project. So on a big sheet of A2 paper I explored some different hand rendered type styles. Keeping my project in mind whilst doing each one...

These are all different random techniques. From using black ink with just my fingers, using ink with a stick, using lines with pen in a scratchy way and using shoe polish. I wanted to make it look quite rough and ready. Keeping in mind the ideas of decay/damage/scratches/markings.

Probably should have explored some colour with these experiments but I did feel using black and grey materials did reflect the ideas nicely.

The bottom left one I cut out the word "Rupture" with a scalpel and rubbed black shoe polish over it and then stuck it over an inked background. The remaining letters that had been cut out I used on the one two above that one. Holding the letters down and rubbing shoe polish around the. This created a really nice eroded look which worked quite well.

Looking back at the mind map I made with ideas around the word "Broken" I really felt like going against my initial thoughts on what connatations broken has. I wanted to pick a phrase or term that actually is quite positive. Using the idea of something being "broken" in a different context.
So what came to mind was the phrase "Break Away". I felt this was quite a nice idea/concept to follow. The idea of breaking free.

After exploring the hand rendered type I really thought the stencil technique was effective and wanted to try it again in some different ways.

So I drew out the letters "Break Away" and cut them out with a scalpel. I then used watered down black ink and an old sponge to create the effect above. I dabbed some areas down with a paper towel and also went over with a pen creating some scratchy lines.
