Looking into other cultures

I picked these unusual slippers to draw from because they had quite an ethnic quality to them and had some really interesting patterns and designs on them. I did some research on the shoes themselves and they are called "Mojari" or "Khussa" and they are south asian handcrafted footwear produced in Punjab, Pakistan and India. They are often embellished with brass nails, bells, ceramic beads and other decorations. In ancient times these were worn by royalty and they are said to encapsulate local ethos, cultural diversity and ehtinicty. I think it's interesting how different cultures adorn themselves in different ways.

I drew the shoes in different ways and them began to focus on the internal patterns, that were actually quite intricate in parts and overall really feminine.

These are some photos of the shoes themselves. Each have very different kind of patterns and colours.

Looking at different adornments I drew some beads overlapping the shoes in different ways. Focusing on the bright colours of the beads and ribbons. I quite like the style in which this has been done, how the shoes are just a simple line drawing which makes the coloured drawing of the beads stand out in contrast.

This is a pattern that I was drawing from my scalf. I really like the different repeated shapes and loved the simple colours. The shapes almost look like feathers/petals/shells so it's clear it's quite nature inspired. The drawing itself reminded me of henna/maori patterns which I thought would be an interesting thing to move onto.
