Trace Elements

Trace Elements Project.

The new project in which we started this week is all to do with Trace Elements. Exploring things such as erosion, decay, marks made by people/animals, (scratches, stains, prints etc). 

Firstly I did some sketchbook pages exploring mark making. Waling round the college I drew random scratches, cracks in the wall, marks on the table, hand prints, paint drips, stains etc, and did some sketchbook pages experimenting with different materials (ink, paint, collage, shoe polish, tape etc) to try and create different marks and replicate some of the things found around the building.

Above is some examples of these pages. Some interesting marks were made with using different edges of cardboard, dipping a shell in some ink, using the rough edge of a sponge etc. What also looked interesting was using masking tape to create shapes. Such as the crosses on the left hand side... these were marks that were made into the wall and did look very chalky and white, so using masking tape and ink over the top replicated this quite nicely.
